Strong Indonesian quake kills 32, flattens homes.

JAKARTA, Indonesia -- A disaster management official says the death toll from a powerful Indonesian earthquake has more than doubled to 32, in a report on Sept 3.

Later the count was increased to at least 75, probably 100. And the magnitude, originally said to be 7.0, was actually much higher, with estimates ranging from 7.4 to 7.7.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake struck at 2:55 p.m. (0755 GMT) off the southern coast of the main island of Java. A tsunami alert was issued but revoked less than an hour later.

The GCP event was set for the 24 hour GMT day, to include some time before, and most of the day after the quake to include developing knowledge of the quake. The result is Chisquare 86783 on 86400 df for p = 0.178 and Z = 0.922.

It is important to keep in mind that we have only a tiny statistical effect, so that it is always hard to distinguish signal from noise. This means that every "success" might be largely driven by chance, and every "null" might include a real signal overwhelmed by noise. In the long run, a real effect can be identified only by patiently accumulating replications of similar analyses.
