This event is a sample representing the Global Meditation Movement's
intended bimonthly mass synchronized meditation.
I received an email
from Elena Popa saying, "I recently found out about the Global
Consciousness Project and think it is a wonderful idea - there are
scientific ways to prove the impact of consciousness and thank you for
exploring that! We are fortunate that dedicated volunteers take part in
this project! I am writing to you about an international movement,
called "The Global Meditation Movement", which will have an event on
June 23 12pm EDT (www.ewao.net) and it will last for 30-60 minutes (up
to every participant). Until now, close to 23.000 people around the
world announced their participation on Facebook. Would you think this is
an event that is worth tracking?
I responded that I am appreciative of all attempts to bring
large numbers of people to share in meditation and other ways of
gathering to help form the future in positive ways. The GCP analysis
shows that single events don't produce interpretable results because the
signal to noise ratio is very small. But since the GMM event is like
many others in its basic premises, I will set the one tomorrow as a
global event in our formal series.
The GCP event was set for three hours, with an hour or so before the
synchronized meditation was to begin, and an hour after. The result is
Chisquare 10787.200 on 10800 df for p = 0.533 and Z = -0.083.
It is important to keep in mind that we have only a tiny
statistical effect, so that it is always hard to distinguish
signal from noise. This means that every "success" might be
largely driven by chance, and every "null" might include a real
signal overwhelmed by noise. In the long run, a real effect can
be identified only by patiently accumulating replications of
similar analyses.
